NEED TO BE CAREFUL WITH REC LETTERS

International students from countries where recommendation letters are not a tradition must explain to their recommenders what the letter is, how long it should be, give them guiding questions or models to follow. A Brazilian faculty in US warned me about that, because he has seen before, more than once, Brazilian professors writing things like "I hereby declare XXXX was my student". They understood it just something to prove the student attended that institution.

you need to build relationship with 3 people through out gradschool

How much debt is too much for the highest ranking program in your field?

I just received a conditional offer of admission from Cambridge, which has the highest ranking anthropology program in the world (but say what you will about rankings). The estimated cost of a 4-year PhD there is £184,276 (including cost of living). I have about $15,000 in savings and no family support. I haven't heard yet whether I'll be offered any funding and, if so, how much it will cover. Obviously \~$220,000 is a lot to take out in loans (and I absolutely won't go if I don't get *any* funding). But how much is too much if you want a top-notch education in one of the best institutions in the world in your field?

SOP

This is very helpful as I’m starting to look into grad school for Fall 2024, thank you! Two questions: will all schools have their own prompt? And where will this prompt/length requirements, etc. be listed - on the website or in the application? I haven’t seen the prompts as I initially browse the website.

Thanks again!

1. Yes, but most are extremely similar, so you will only have to make minor touches.

2. If they didn't specify a word count or page limit then I kept it to two pages, single spaced 12 pt font, with one blank line between paragraphs.

Sharing my SOP from a few cycles ago

Hi everyone, I know that a lot of you are working on your SoPs right now. In my own admissions cycle I liked to get inspiration and ideas from...

Did I ruin my chances for grad school?

Every grad school that I wanted to apply to requires 3 letters of recommendation. The problem is that I never made connections with professors because I was too shy to go into their office hours. I got A’s in their classes and graduated with a good GPA but I feel like that wouldn’t be enough. I also don’t have any outstanding accomplishments aside from good grades. Is there any hope for me at this point?

Email profs and attach a great sample of your work. They won’t be able to speak to who you are as a person but if you excelled in their classes they can speak to who you are as a student. It’ll be okay.

Just agreeing with what everyone else says. Go and reach out because you will never know! I’m not a stellar student myself, and I was so afraid to ask my professors, but they were still really willing to write me one! If you don’t try, then it’s a 100% no, but if you ask, at least you still have hope, especially since you’re a great student! :)

You can schedule time with them, present your ideas and motivations and solicit their inputs. Try gauge their willingness to recommend before asking for a reco letter.

I got an LOR from a prof who only taught me 1 class, In which I used to stay back after class to ask a couple questions and made small talk with in the elevator. Meanwhile my instructor of 2 years ghosted me multiple times. You never know who'll be your saviour, just gotta try.

Go through your transcript and find out the email IDs of the professors you had class with. Then write an email to them along with your resume,
final projects, and list of grad programs you are applying to. You will be surprised at the response rate.

If you’re still in undergrad, I’d take some time to go by the office hours of the professors you think would be good and talk it over with them. Bring a copy of your transcript and maybe some of the work you did for them and introduce yourself. They may remember you, especially if you did well and had their class recently.

If you’re out of undergrad, most grad programs will accept LORs from supervisors and other professionals you’ve had a relationship with in the workforce. Most are understanding that if you’ve been out of school, you may not have maintained any connection to your profs, and a work reference may be more relevant.

If you worked while in school, a letter from a supervisor there would work as well. I.e. if you were an RA,  a residential coordinator would likely know you well enough to write one
