대학원생에게 꼭 물어봐야할 질문 (비지팅데이 1:1인터뷰)

 

비지팅 데이 때 혹은 대학원 인터뷰를 하게 될 때, 그 학교에 다니고 있는 대학원생들을 인터뷰할 기회를 접하게 되는데요. 재학 중인 대학원생들을 만나게 될 때 인터넷으로 얻을 수 없는 여러 가지 정보를 얻을 수 있기 때문에 미리 준비해놓는 거를 추천합니다. 여기서 기억해야할 것들은 다음과 같습니다.

 

➤  학생들에게 질문을 할 때 따로 1:1로 하면 더 진실된 답을 들을 확률이 높습니다. 그래서 웬만하면 교수들이 없을 때 프라이빗한 자리에서 중요한 질문을 많이 하는 것이 좋습니다

➤ 여기서 정확하고 편견없는 대답은 3-4학년에게서 들을 확률이 높습니다

➤ 5-7+연차 대학원생들은 많이 지쳐있어서 안 좋게 대답합니다

➤ 1-2년 차는 너무 긍정적이게 대답할 수 있습니다

➤ 대학원생들은 직접 교수 험담을 하지 않을 확률이 높습니다. 그래서 말의 뉘앙스 혹은 톤을 잘 캐치하는 게 중요합니다. 농담이라고 생각해도 잘 생각해보면 농담이 아닐 수도 있거든요. 

 

학생: 재정 관련  

1. Does the school pay you enough for you to live comfortably?
2. Will you be expected to apply for funding alone or do you work with the PI together for funding or PI takes care of it?
3. How will you be funded? Does the program guarantee funding?
4. How much does the stipend increase per year? 
5. Do you know if there is funding available for international students from the department or school? Or any scholarships, such as dissertation scholarships or short-term funding?
6. What kind of fees are paid by the student? 가끔 activity fee (활동비)라고 해서 학생이 따로 내야 되는 돈이 있습니다. 학과/학교마다 다릅니다. 
7. What is the workload for TAship?
8. Is the TAship always available for the students? What happens if they don't get the TAship or research funding?
9. Does the department help students who don't have funding?

학생: 캠퍼스 라이프 관련  

1. Where do students live? Off-campus? If so, what is commuting like? Do you enjoy living in THIS CITY?
2. What is your life-like during the weekends?
3. What is the grad housing like? (어떤 학교는 graduate housing renovation라는 이유로 몇 년간 학생들을 기숙사에서 쫓아낼 수 있거든요. 그래서 미리 아는 게 중요합니다.)
4. What student organization are you part of? OR for international students? 
5. Any professional development activities (workshop, conference, job-fair) available from the department, school, or student-led org? 
6. What social activities do the graduate students organize?
7. Are you happy? (농담조처럼 말해도 됩니다. 근데 가끔 이러한 질문에 대답을 못하는 학생이 있으면 엄청난 큰 red-flag라고 할 수 있습니다)
8. What do their students do during their first year to get started on research?
9. Where do students live mostly? Any places you recommend or area? 
10. What do students here do for fun?

학생: 중요하고 까다로운 질문

1. What concerns did you have coming here? Is there something you wish you had known coming in?
2. What is the mentoring style like for professor XXX? 
3. How many hours do you work? 
4. Any faculty to avoid? (교수가 없고 학생들과 많이 친해졌다고 생각했을 때 물어보세요) 
5. How is the preliminary exam/quals? Is it verbal or written? The pass rate? (석박사 자격시험 난이도는 학교마다 달라서 미리 물어보는 게 중요합니다) 
6. What is the program's expectation?
7. GPA cut off?
8. How many students leave or are kicked out every year? Why did they leave? 
9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of the department? 
10. What is the job market like for our department?
11. Average time for students to graduate? 
12. Requirement에 대해 더 자세히 물어보세요: 연구실 Rotations, 조교, 수업, dissertation, 시험, 졸업 요건 등등 
13. Are there any students who are 7+ years into a Ph.D.? How long does it take to graduate typically?
14. Why did you choose to work at PROGRAM NAME? What is your favorite part?
15. The selling point of this school for you?
16. What does a typical day look like as a first-year?
17. How does research mentorship work at PROGRAM NAME?
